Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake played the halftime show of Super Bowl XXXVIII. Jackson came out with a politically charged, very serious song, and everything was going as expected. Then Timberlake came out and brought sexy back, as he does. At the very end of their set, Timberlake reached over to grab at Jackson’s clothes in the choreography, and then it happened. The infamous “wardrobe malfunction” — a.k.a., “the nip slip” — a dancing artist’s worst onstage nightmare. This video is NSFW, though I’m sure your boss has seen it already. What is so impressive is how quickly the whole thing got covered up as they finished their performance in perfectly timed darkness.

Okay, when songs like this sound so chill and happy, it’s hard to notice they’re actually in minor at first. Could it maybe be the ninth chords? I mean, these chords are thick right from the get-go, so for type names I’m gonna have to go by the bass notes and piano chunks to make i  iiº ♭III  ♭VI  v —, and then also a V after that iiº. But again, there are so many sevenths, ninths, and elevenths boo’d up here combined with the fizzy timbre of the synth that it’s hard to tell what exactly to call all these exotic ice cream flavors.

I’m not here to tell you to “fake it ‘til you make it.” The person that coined that divine piece of wisdom has probably never experienced the daunting 10 seconds before walking out onto a stage and singing in front of hundreds of people. I am, however, here to tell you that getting a grip on anxieties and insecurities around your vocal performance is perfectly possible.

Even if you’re not a huge fan of Ali Farka Touré or other West African musicians, you’ve still probably seen one at a friend’s house or in an attic somewhere — or heard them on a Ben Harper song. Or maybe you even have one yourself that your weird aunt got you for Hannukah one year. Well, hopefully we can help you dust it off and give it a new life.

Everyone knows that drinking water is the easiest way to stay hydrated. But did you know that drinking melon water is even better? Not only does it add some welcome flavor to your bland ol’ H2O, but adding chunks of watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew will actually hydrate your vocal cords and throat faster than plain water. The molecules of the melon are larger than those of water, and therefore stay in the vocal tract longer, resulting in higher levels of hydration!

We love her campaign title. “Be the Producer” invites her fans and friends to join the process directly and make an impact on her project with their contributions.

When you’re playing shows, tell your audience you’re looking for fun stuff to do in town, ideally stuff that doesn’t cost a lot of money. Yelp and Google are great, but getting recommendations from the locals is always the best way to find things to do. For example, when we were in Oklahoma City, a guy in the crowd happened to work for the biggest venue in town. He got us into a Hozier concert for free that night — win.

Many artists brag about getting very little sleep because they’re so committed to winning. And that’s great. Good for them. And, yeah, you may have to go through seasons where you’re not getting a ton of sleep. Maybe you’re working on a project that you’re super passionate about and it’s taking some time. That’s fine, but give yourself a break every now and then.

The great thing about studying pop tunes is that they very rarely stray from a given key. They like to keep things rather diatonic. This means that with just a small bit of practice, you can start to recognize these chord progressions for yourself, even without your instrument in hand. We will go much deeper into our understanding of how these chords function in later articles, but for now let’s just get comfortable with what we get from “Sorry.”

In his book The Meaning of Human Existence, Pulitzer Prize-winning biologist Edward O. Wilson argues that “healthy people believe intuitively that they can hear every almost every sound. However… we walk through nature like a deaf person on the streets of New York, sensing only a few vibrations, able to interpret almost nothing.” So I hope your cat or dog is a music fan, because they are far more likely to appreciate the crisp top-end preserved in your favorite lossless audio format than you are.

Soundfly courses are interactive, practice-based, motivational, and inspirational, and these are just some of the reasons why our students have continually come back to us with positive feedback, even more positive results, and often to take more courses in other fields.
